Career opportunities

Waltham Forest Council has established a partnership board which aims to provide residents with the skills to compete for job opportunities.

The council has set out its objectives in the recently launched employment and skills prospectus for the borough, which includes supporting new businesses and helping them to understand local employment needs. A new careers programme co-ordinated with schools and education providers will also be created.

“We want to create clear pathways into employment and enable residents to improve their skills so they can take advantage of the job opportunities being created by growth in the borough,” said Councillor Clare Coghill, cabinet member for economic growth and high streets and co-chair of the partnership board.

The Waltham Forest Employment and Skills Partnership Board, which met for the first time in March 2016, is made up of representatives from the council, education and training providers, employers, investors, developers and charities.

It aims to encourage investment in the borough and to build better relationships between the local community and businesses.

“The council can’t do this all alone, so we have established the employment and skills partnership so that local partners can come together to work towards our common goal of supporting local employment and skills development.”

Initiatives already implemented include an employment project called ‘Steps into Work’, which will support 1,200 disadvantaged residents to find a job between now and December 2018.

The project is being funded by £2million from the council and the European Structural and Investment Funds.
