Walthamstow walks to school

by Natalie Vincent Fri 25 May 2018, 4:01 pm

Around 22,000 Waltham Forest school children took to the streets of the borough last week as part of Walk to School Week.

Pupils aged five to 11 from around 45 primary schools signed up for the annual event from 21 May to 25 May. Walk to School Week was launched to highlight the benefits of walking and encouraging a healthier lifestyle.

Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for the environment, said: "What many people don't realise is that they are exposed to higher air pollution in an enclosed car than when they walk or cycle on a main road.

"Through the Enjoy Waltham Forest programme we have been investing in prioritising pedestrians near schools, to encourage everyone, but especially parents and schoolchildren, to feel safer when walking around."
